Inflammation
Inflammation is the response of tissues to injury caused by pathogens, damaged cells, or allergens.
Acute inflammation is the initial response to harmful stimuli, involving increased blood flow and vascular permeability, and accumulation of fluid, leucocytes, and inflammatory mediators.
Chronic inflammation involves a shift in the type of cells present and simultaneous destruction and healing of the affected tissue. Chronic inflammation can lead to conditions such as asthma, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases and transplant rejection.
